New River Canoe Race

This Ashe County tradition is sponsored by generous donations from community sponsors. Proceeds from the race support ongoing restoration work and river clean ups in North Carolina being done by the New River Conservancy.

Whether you compete, float for fun, or just spectate, come enjoy a beautiful day on the banks of the New River!  Race is on the South Fork of the New River from Zaloo’s Canoes to the Wagoner Access at New River State Park.

Bring your own canoe or kayak, or rent one from Zaloo’s for a discounted rate. Zaloo’s will provide a free shuttle on the day of the race. The average time for new paddlers on this 5 mile stretch of river is around 1 hour. Many contestants with advanced skills have completed the race in less than 45 minutes. The race will take place rain or shine!
