SUMMARY:Alleghany Live Stake Giveaway
DESCRIPTION:We’re giving away live stakes! \nLive stakes are cuttings from dormant trees that can grow into new plants along river or stream banks for riparian buffer restoration! In the winter\, trees go into dormancy\, a natural process where they conserve energy to survive the cold. This is the perfect time for planting live stakes\, as the cuttings can focus on growing strong roots before the spring season arrives. \nThe live staking season typically runs from November to March\, where you can plant hardy hardwood stakes that will establish their roots first. These roots stay steady\, quietly working underground\, and when spring arrives\, the stakes burst into life\, growing their branches and leaves. \nWe will be offering bundles of 50 stakes with varieties ranging from Silky Dogwood\, Silky Willow\, Ninebark\, and Elderberry. Instructions on planting will be provided. \nLive stakes and educational packets are free\, but to ensure we have enough live stakes sign up is required. \n\nThese live stake giveaways are a partnership between New River Conservancy\, Blue Ridge Resource Conservation & Development\,  North Carolina Wildlife Federation (High Country Wild Chapter) and National Wildlife Federation’s Trees for Wildlife Program\, with support from local Soil and Water Conservation District and Cooperative Extension offices. \n  \n\nREGISTER HERE BY MARCH 6

SUMMARY:Naked Creek Bradford Pear Invasive Species Removal
DESCRIPTION:This event is free and open to the public.\n.\nJoin us for a Bradford Pear removal workday at Naked Creek in the Mount Jefferson Natural Area. We will follow up this removal effort with a planting of native plant species along Naked Creek on November 8th.\n.\nBradford pear trees are not native to the United States. These trees are cultivars of the Callery pear\, which was brought to the U.S. from China in the early 1900s in an attempt to hybridize them and improve disease resistance of pear trees. By 1950\, the Bradford pear cultivar had been planted widely\, and other cultivars have been produced since. They are considered a highly invasive species – spreading rapidly and choking out native plant species. They provide little to no food for native insects\, birds\, or other wildlife\, harming local ecosystems by reducing biodiversity.\n.\n\nYou will receive the full event details and updates upon successfully submitting this registration form.\nYou must complete the registration section to secure your spot at the event.\n\n.\nPartners for Wildlife – High Country Wildlife\, NC State Parks\n.\nREGISTER HERE
