DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, Aug. 9\, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.\, the Museum of Ashe County History invites the public to attend the official ribbon cutting for its newest exhibit\, titled “A Home Away from Home: Recreation and Tourism in Ashe County.” \n\n\nThe new exhibit helps tell the story of Ashe County’s early tourism industry\, ranging from its historic resorts such as Healing Springs and Shatley Springs to the creation of Mount Jefferson State Park and the conservation of the New River. Some of the artifacts presented in this exhibit include historic postcards and brochures\, memorabilia from the Civilian Conservation Corps\, and the very pen used by President Gerald Ford to sign legislation designating a section of the New River as part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. \nThe New River Conservancy will have an information table set up.

DESCRIPTION:We will be hosting two clean ups after Ann Rose’s Celebration in Lansing\, North Carolina. \n. \nThese New River cleanups are co-sponsored by Ann Rose – River Warrior. The New River Conservancy will provide shuttle\, canoes\, life jackets\, trash grabbers\, trash bags\, tire pullers\, and a great time. \n There will be a Big Horse Creek cleanup at 3:00 to  5:00 PM following Ann Rose’s Celebration at the Lansing Creeper Trail Park\, and a river clean up at Deep Ford Bridge. We will be running a shuttle from Lansing Creeper Trail Park at 5:00 after Ann Rose’s Celebration.\n.\n\nLAND BASED CLEAN UP:  We will be cleaning alongside Big Horse Creek on the Lansing Creeper Trail. This clean up is low pressure and you can spend as much or as little time helping as you want.  Please register for the LAND BASED HERE\n.\nRIVER BASED CLEAN UP: We will be cleaning a small section of river up from the Deep Ford Bridge. Celebrating Success.\nConservation of the New River in Ashe County has a rich and successful history\, one that deserves to be remembered and celebrated. \nOn Saturday\, May 17th\, 2025 the New River Conservancy\, The Old Store at Grassy Creek\, and many other partners will host a day of events that not only share the story\, but teach us about conservation efforts that will help us enjoy the New River and its wonderful wildlife for years to come. \nWhy the name “Saved by a Salamander”? What does it mean? \nThe Old Store is located in Grassy Creek\, North Carolina on the northern border of Ashe County. One of the legends floating around Grassy Creek is that when the American Electric Power Company made plans to dam the New River and flood the Grassy Creek valley in the 1970s\, the obstacle that finally prevented them from doing so was a salamander. James Watson\, a member of The Old Store staff and avid herpetologist\, decided to dig into this story a little more. And what he learned was fascinating!  The Salamander in question was a hellbender and it might have played a role in saving Grassy Creek. \nThe rest of the story includes the designation of the New River as a scenic water way and the origins of the New River Conservancy. \nSaved by a Salamander Day tells the story and raises awareness of ways we can continue to support the conservation of this historic watershed for future generations. \n\nBoondocks Food Truck will be available on site\, as well as yummy goodies from The Old Store. \n \n \n
