DESCRIPTION:Want to meet the crew before they leave Virginia.  The NRX26 will have a “Meet & Greet” at the Narrows\, VA 4th of July festivities on July 4 in the Town Park along Wolf Creek. Stop by their booth in the afternoon and learn more about the journey\, where the crew camps\, and how the expansion of the New River Water Trail can benefit the region.\n\nThere is a $5 admission to the Town Park for the 75th Narrows Homecoming Festival.\n\nThis summer\, the New River Conservancy (NRC) hopes to draw attention to a broader story of connectedness of New River watershed residents through the New River Expedition 2026. (NRX26) Beginning in Todd\, North Carolina on June 2\, and traveling all the way to the confluence of the Gauley River in Gauley Bridge\, West Virginia\, the NRX26 is on its way to paddling a 320 mile adventure throughout the entire New River watershed.\n\nThe NRX26 crew is discovering and experiencing the watershed in a way few get to do. “We want people to experience the expedition vicariously because they are going places that many\, many people don’t get to see\,” NRC Communications and Marketing Director\, Lisa Stansell – Galitz said.

SUMMARY:Live Stake Giveaway
DESCRIPTION:New River Conservancy will be hosting a FREE LIVE STAKE giveaway on December 6 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Draper\, Virginia office during the Holiday Open House. \nPlease complete the form  to register HERE \nLive stakes are cuttings from dormant trees that can grow into new plants! In the winter\, trees go into dormancy\, a natural process where they conserve energy to survive the cold. This is the perfect time for planting live stakes\, as the cuttings can focus on growing strong roots before the spring season arrives. \nThe live staking season typically runs from November to March\, where you can plant hardy hardwood stakes that will establish their roots first. These roots stay steady\, quietly working underground\, and when spring arrives\, the stakes burst into life\, growing their branches and leaves. \nBut that’s not all—these tough roots play a crucial role in protecting stream banks from erosion\, especially during high-flow events. By planting live stakes when trees are naturally conserving their energy\, we help ensure a higher success rate for survival along riparian buffers. \nIf you have a stream bank and would like to restore vegetation along the bank\, this is a great opportunity. \nLive Staking is a method that can be used to add plant life back to the stream bank. This is something that can easily be done by landowners that involves planting stem cuttings taken from dormant trees (before bud break in the spring). The cuttings are called “live stakes”. These cuttings will establish a root network\, preventing further soil loss. \nPlanting live stakes is simple\, but will probably require you to work from the stream (wear waders or high boots). You can use something such as rebar approximately 2 feet long to create pilot holes. Place the stakes 2-3 feet apart in several rows\, in a triangular pattern. The pilot hole should be at a 90-degree angle to the soil. Plant the stakes at a depth that ½ to 2/3 of the stake is in the soil. These are planted densely with the expectation that not all will survive. Only plant as high on the stream bank as the live stake will reach the water table (the cutting needs to be in contact with moist soil in order to root. During the first year don’t expect to see much above-ground growth as establishing root growth in the first year is most important. Wait until the second growing season before evaluating which stakes survived and which did not. \nREGISTER HERE

DESCRIPTION:Friends of the Little River Clean-up\nJoin up with the locals of Grayson County to help clean up The Little River–a New River Tributary! \nContact Keith Andrews or Will Sowards for more information on this Clean River Month Clean-up. \nHOW TO PLAN FOR YOUR RIVER CLEAN-UP: \n\nPFDs (Personal Flotation Devices) REQUIRED for your safety\nSturdy gloves for picking up trash and debris\nDress to get wet and dirty–you WILL get wet and dirty!\nWear river-safe shoes\, preferably with a closed toe–no flip-flops\, please!\nBring a kayak or canoe if you have them!\n\nBags will be provided to collect river trash at the Boat Launch site. All trash and debris will be weighed and then collected by our partners at Virginia DWR and Grayson County Public Works. \nIn the event of severe weather or poor river conditions\, the clean-up will be cancelled. Please refer to the clean-up organizers to know if a clean-up is cancelled. DESCRIPTION:Please register for our New River Clean Up from Farmers Fish Camp to Independence on August 2nd. \n.\nMeet at Farmers Fish Camp at 10:00 AM.\n\nThis New River cleanup is co-sponsored by New River Campground\,  New River Wildlife and Conservation Club\, and New River Conservancy. New River Campground will provide canoes\, life jackets\, and shuttle. New River Conservancy will provide gloves\, trash grabbers\, tire pullers\, and a good time.\n\nWe will be cleaning the river from Farmers Fish Camp to the boat launch in Independence.\n\nDress to get wet and dirty and bring plenty of water. Wear shoes designed for protection that you don’t mind getting dirty and a change of clothes for after getting off the water.\n\nUpon completion of this registration you will be contacted by New River Conservancy Clean Up Coordinator William Sowards with further information.\n\nREGISTER HERE \nQuestions?
