SUMMARY:Ann Rose Send Off
DESCRIPTION:An organic farmer and former nurse\, Ann Rose’s farm is nestled in the Appalachian mountains and is starting to be impacted by drought. For the last 3 years her springs have dried up in August resulting in crop losses. \nBy doing the New-Kan-Oh-Miss river adventure\, Ann hopes to bring more awareness to water shortages nationwide and water pollution in my watershed. Her springs are part of the watersheds that flow to the Gulf. \nBeginning July 7\, Ann plans to kayak 1895 miles starting close to home on the New River\, continuing on the Kanawha then Ohio rivers\, to join the Mississippi until reaching the Gulf of Mexico\, 10 weeks later. \nJoin us as she launches her voyage from the Old Orchard Creek Store in Lansing\, NC on the banks of Big Horse Creek. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:It's All One Watershed
DESCRIPTION:Our Operations Coordinator\, Stella Cybulski\, will be on hand at the third session of Friends of Peak Creek’s “It’s All One Watershed” event to educate our youth with the Trash Game and a very cool River Clean Up “Operations-style” game. \nHow long does it take for trash to decompose? Six years or 600 years? Let’s talk trash! Play the Trash Game with Office Snook! Everybody lives downstream of something! Let’s play the spinny trash grabber and operation river clean up games. \nBring the kids and learn about our watershed and why clean water is important. \nThe Friends of Claytor Lake and the Blue Ridge Land Trust will also be there with fun educational games about the environment.

SUMMARY:16 Frogs Stroll through Blacksburg\, VA
DESCRIPTION:16 small\, bronze frog statues been strategically placed throughout town and the surrounding area to call attention to the fresh water flowing under and around the streets and buildings of downtown Blacksburg.\n.\nWe are happy to partner with 16 Frogs to offer this educational stroll through Blacksburg. Join Downtown Blacksburg\, Inc Executive Director\,Tracie Hughes and NRC Marketing Director\, Lisa Stansell-Galitz to visit at least 10 of these.\n.\nDowntown Blacksburg and the Virginia Tech campus are underlain by numerous streams and waterways that have been piped\, channeled or covered over the last 200+ years. These abundant freshwater streams\, springs and seeps are an essential part of our history\, and in fact\, are why Native Americans\, and later\, European settlers\, settled in and around present-day Blacksburg.\n.\nSince Blacksburg is located near several of the headwaters for the New River\, where our municipal drinking water supply is obtained\, we have a very direct connection to and reliance on our local water supplies that many residents may not be aware of.\n.\nThe 16 Frogs campaign seeks to restore the health of Stroubles Creek\, the broader watershed\, and the water quality of downstream communities through increased public interest and awareness.\n.\nWe will meet in the parking lot of the Blacksburg Library on Miller Street at 10:30 am. Wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing. If case of inclement weather\, this event will be cancelled.\n.\nRegistration is not required\, but suggested at info@newriverconservancy.org
