SUMMARY:The Big Plant
DESCRIPTION:The Big Plant is a community event hosted by the Environmental Coalition at Virginia Tech where thousands of trees are planted on Virginia Tech’s campus and surrounding Blacksburg area to initiate ecological restoration. The event is open to the public\, which brings in hundreds of students and community members of all backgrounds and ages to volunteer. \nThe Big Plant strives to enable positive environmental change for individuals who may think they have no power over their macro-environment. The original cause for the Big Plant was to combat climate change\, and while that is still a primary focus\, trees can serve as an ecological answer for more than one environmental issue. \nThis event is primarily funded by New River Conservancy and is a joint partnership between NRC\, Virginia Tech\, and the Environmental Coalition at VT.\n \nThis year will be a big project site at the center of VT’s campus. Base camp will be about 1/4 mile from the outlet of the VT Duck Pond. We will be planting the riparian habitat along Stroubles Creek from Duck Pond outlet extending nearly a mile downstream on both banks. We will also have several other reforestation projects occurring scattered around VT’s central campus. \nTo register to volunteer and register\, please click REGISTER \nYou will need to fill out this waiver at the event: WAIVER

SUMMARY:New River Park Ribbon Cutting\, NC
DESCRIPTION:The New River Conservancy and Ashe County invite you to join them for the ribbon cutting of the New River Park on Highway 163\, West Jefferson\, North Carolina.  The ribbon cutting will begin at 11:00 am with representatives from Ashe County\, Ashe County Chamber of Commerce\, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and New River Conservancy (NRC). Following the ceremony\, there will be opportunities to tour the new park with Foggy Mountain Nursery and NRC.  Swimming in the New River will be encouraged\, or bring your boat for a relaxed paddle to Elk Shoals.  Please RSVP at EVENTS@NewRiverConservancy.org if you are planning to attend. \nAfter the Conservancy purchased and transferred Elk Shoals (270-acre former Methodist camp) to the New River State Park\, it was evident that a public river access upstream would enhance the river experience.  Elk Shoals is 5 miles downstream of this new park and there are no bridges in this section of the river.  Not long after the Elk Shoals acquisition\, a new opportunity arose\, and  in the fall of 2021 NRC received donated land adjacent to the HWY 163 bridge where there was no public access. This project was born of that need for a new recreational access and has resulted in an incredible resource for West Jefferson\, Ashe County\, North Carolina (NC) and the New River Watershed in general. \nThrough the generosity of our donors and several grants NRC created the New River Park on Highway 163 in West Jefferson\, North Carolina.   By restoring the river buffer with native shrubs and trees\, the Conservancy stabilized the river bank\, minimizing erosion and preventing further sedimentation of the headwaters of the New River. This restoration work will endure as the New River remains a resilient and healthy attraction for both residents and visitors alike. \nOfficially opening Friday\, August 18 at 11:00 am\, the park now includes a new river access ramp\, parking lot\, information kiosk\, picnic shelter and portajohn.  Paddlers will now be able to traverse the New River from this location and takeout at the Elk Shoals 5 miles downriver. This is a beautiful paddle or float as there are no low water bridges to worry about\, nor any difficult rapids. \nHuge thanks go to Ashe County of North Carolina\, State of North Carolina\,  North Carolina Land and Water Fund\, High Country Association of Realtors\, US Fish and Wildlife Service\, Foggy Mountain Nursery and all our donors\, both big and small.  Please RSVP if you are planning to attend the ribbon cutting at EVENTS@NewRiverConservancy.org. There are still opportunities to contribute to the park. \nPlease contact Elizabeth Underwood at elizabeth@newriverconservancy.org or  donate at  https://newriverconservancy.org/donate/  We couldn’t protect the New without you. \nNew River Conservancy is a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to protecting the New River watershed in Virginia\, West Virginia\, and North Carolina\, and is based in West Jefferson\, N.C.\, near the river’s headwaters. \nPhoto courtesy Kelley Germain\, Germain Media LLC

SUMMARY:Grayson Landcare July Meeting
DESCRIPTION:August is Clean River Month in Grayson County\, and to kick off early\, Grayson Landcare is pleased to announce Elizabeth Underwood\, executive director of New River Conservancy\, as their special guest speaker at the Tuesday\, July 17\, 2023 meeting at the Baldwin Auditorium of the 1908 Courthouse in Independence at 7:00 PM. \nUnderwood will update the community on the New River Hill Forest\, purchased by the New River Conservancy. The New River Hill Forest\, near the New River Hill Farm\, purchase ensures that 174 acres and 2\,530 feet of riverfront are permanently protected. The New River Conservancy raised nearly 1 million dollars to purchase this land with support from Fred and Alice Stanback\, Charlotte Hanes\, the Jack M Matthews Foundation\, and many other donors. The Conservancy then gifted it to the New River Soil and Water Conservation District\, which encompasses Grayson and Carroll Counties\, and the city of Galax in Virginia\, who will maintain it in perpetuity. \nNow\, old logging roads have been upgraded into hiking trails for locals and visitors\, and river boat access is nearing completion. Once this work is completed and sufficient parking and signage are in place\, New River Hill Forest will be open to the public. \nGrayson LandCare and New River Conservancy have been partners since New River Wildlife & Conservation Club persuaded Grayson County to declare August River Cleanup Month 3 years ago. Grayson Landcare is partnering with New River Wildlife & Conservation Club and the New River Conservancy in a planned river clean up on Saturday August 12th\, with more cleanups throughout the  month. \n
