DESCRIPTION:The 44th New River Canoe Race and Family Float will be held on May 30\, 2026 Jefferson\, NC..This Ashe County tradition is sponsored by generous donations from community sponsors. Proceeds from the race support ongoing restoration work and river clean ups in North Carolina being done by the New River Conservancy..Whether you compete\, float for fun\, or just spectate\, come enjoy a beautiful day on the banks of the New River!\n.Bring your own canoe or kayak\, or rent one from Zaloo’s for a discounted rate. Zaloo’s also provides a free shuttle on the day of the race. The average time for new paddlers on this 5 mile stretch of river is around 1 hour. Many contestants with advanced skills have completed the race in less than 45 minutes. The group will paddle to shelter 3 at Bisset Park\, where burgers and hotdogs will be served from 11:30 – 1pm\, courtesy of Ameriprise Financial of Radford.\n.\nCommunity members will be encouraged to engage in stewardship by bringing an onion or potato bag for trash collection while appreciating and celebrating the wondrous New River. DESCRIPTION:Want to meet the crew before they leave Virginia.  The NRX26 will have a “Meet & Greet” at the Narrows\, VA 4th of July festivities on July 4 in the Town Park along Wolf Creek. Stop by their booth in the afternoon and learn more about the journey\, where the crew camps\, and how the expansion of the New River Water Trail can benefit the region.\n\nThere is a $5 admission to the Town Park for the 75th Narrows Homecoming Festival.\n\nThis summer\, the New River Conservancy (NRC) hopes to draw attention to a broader story of connectedness of New River watershed residents through the New River Expedition 2026. (NRX26) Beginning in Todd\, North Carolina on June 2\, and traveling all the way to the confluence of the Gauley River in Gauley Bridge\, West Virginia\, the NRX26 is on its way to paddling a 320 mile adventure throughout the entire New River watershed.\n\nThe NRX26 crew is discovering and experiencing the watershed in a way few get to do. “We want people to experience the expedition vicariously because they are going places that many\, many people don’t get to see\,” NRC Communications and Marketing Director\, Lisa Stansell – Galitz said.
