Meet Daniel Smith

Water Watcher Coordinator

Daniel is always open to new challenges and adventures that will teach him something new or inspire him to keep moving forward. This passion for the environment and desire for new experiences lead Daniel to become a New River Water Watcher in 2021. He has since performed over a year of water quality monitoring tests on Crab Creek and plans to expand on his volunteer role in the future. As a doctoral student in the Biological Systems Engineering department at Virginia Tech, Daniel’s dissertation research focuses on understanding how plant roots protect riverbank soil from erosion by flowing water.

In his free time, Daniel is an avid biker, hiker, and loves spending time outside and studying the environment surrounding him.
