Through the Accredited Land Trust Program, New River Conservancy (NRC) has helped to protect over 10,000 acres of land and over 100 miles of New River and tributaries through land conservation, permanent sustainable management plans, and conservation easements. We have worked closely with the New River State Park to add over 1,700 acres of land to the park to be permanently protected and accessible to the visitors and local community. Acquisitions like this help us protect areas in and around the New River by donating them to a government entity that will protect them in perpetuity.
What is a land trust?
As an accredited land trust since 2011, NRCis one of 480 land trusts that have helped communities conserve habitat for wildlife and plants, secure water quality, ensure land is available for future generations, provide equitable access to nature, protect family farms and ranches, tackle climate resilience, build healthy communities and so much more.

Why does accreditation matter?
The accreditation seal is a mark of distinction, and being accredited helps your land trust to stand out, to say to landowners, funders and other supporters: “Invest in us. We have proven we are a strong, effective organization you can trust to conserve your land forever.” An accredited term is five years, with a rigorous renewal process to ensure best practices and the highest standards of operation.

The land trust accreditation program recognizes land conservation organizations that meet national quality standards for protecting important natural places and working lands forever. New River Conservancy (NRC) is pleased to announce it is applying for renewal of accreditation. A public comment period is now open. Comments received before March 19, 2027 will be most useful.
The Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance (LTA), conducts an extensive review of each applicant’s policies and programs. NRC is applying to renew their accreditation. As a member of the LTA, NRC can assure their landowners and other stakeholders that they vigorously and thoroughly reviewed all of their endeavors and are following best management practices to protect natural places and working lands.
The Commission invites public input and accepts signed, written comments on pending applications. Comments must relate to how New River Conservancy complies with national quality standards. These standards address the ethical and technical operation of a land trust.
