Narrows, VA Wolf Creek riparian buffer planting huge success

New River Conservancy (NRC) partnered with the Town of Narrows on Saturday, March 2, 2024  to plant native species of bare-root trees and shrubs along the new Wolf Creek Trail leading from the Duck Pond down to the Princeton Lane bridge. In addition to individuals, volunteers came from Giles County Access to Community College Education (ACCE), Narrows High School,  Narrows Boy Scout Troop 68, Giles County Rotary Club, Giles County Recovery Court,  Narrows Town Council, and the New River Chapter of the Virginia Plant Society.   Trees were also planted at the green space by the Farmer’s Market.

Funding for the 260  trees and shrubs came from a Virginia Outdoors Foundation grant the New River Valley Regional Commission received for the Plant Southwest Virginia Natives Campaign.  Outgoing NRC Board member, Nicole Hersch was instrumental in helping the Town of Narrows receive this grant.

NRC Restoration Director, Katie Krogmeier, along with NRC New River Valley Program Coordinator, Cathy Hanks were on site to instruct and help plant.  NRC partnered with the Stroubles Creek Coalition to provide the tools to plant.
