New River Conservancy plans local planting days in January

With the goal of reducing erosion and enhancing habitat for local wildlife along area creeks and the South Fork of the New River, the New River Conservancy (NRC) will be hosting two upcoming volunteer events to plant sapling trees at county parks in Todd and Boone, North Carolina during the month of January.  NRC Director of Operations and Programs, Joe Johnson, says “By restoring the riparian corridor along the New River and Hardin Creek, we will reduce erosion and enhance habitat for wildlife.”

Contrary to popular belief, winter provides a unique opportunity for successful tree establishment and growth. Winter often brings more rain and snow to many areas. Planting trees during these months allows them to benefit from natural moisture, reducing the need for excessive watering. This moisture is crucial for the initial growth of trees, and winter provides a natural advantage. Additionally, cooler temperatures and reduced sun exposure during the winter months significantly reduce the stress on newly planted trees. With less demand for water and nutrients, trees have a chance to acclimate gradually and establish themselves before the warmer seasons.

The first event will be held at Green Valley Community Park along the New River  in Todd, NC  on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

The second event will be held at Watuaga High School along Hardin Creek in Boone, NC on Saturday, January 24, 2026.  (Should weather be an issue, a back up date of January 31 is planned.)

If you plan on volunteering, please wear warm clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, rubber boots or sturdy shoes.  If you can, please bring work gloves, shovels, and garden shears, plus water and snacks.  NRC will provide gloves, shovels and shears as well.   Get ready to dig in, have fun, and make a difference for the waters, woodlands and wildlife of the New River. We look forward to seeing you there.

Please register on the NRC website on the “Events” page.  After registering, Joe Johnson with New River Conservancy will reach out with additional details.

These volunteer events are co-sponsored by the New River Conservancy, the NC Wildlife Federation’s High Country Wild Chapter, National Wildlife Federation’s Trees for Wildlife Program,Trout Unlimited, NC Works, Mountain True , the Upper New Riverkeeper and the Town of Boone’s Sustainability Department.
