NRC Participates in Streambank Repair Certification Workshop

New River Conservancy staff and volunteers participated in the NC State University Biological and Agricultural Engineering Extension Streambank Repair Certification Workshop in Marshall, NC. The workshop provided an overview of streambank repair, buffer rules and regulations, riparian plants, and identifying repair candidates.

We learned how to protect and improve the natural environment of streams by stabilizing the stream bank and other eroding areas. NC State staff and other local experts provided practical, cost-effective solutions using natural materials and native plants to create a healthy streamside.

We also toured the restoration-in-progress of French Broad Island and participated in hands-on stream protection practices including harvesting live-staked native plants and installing live-stakes on a stream.

With new knowledge, our staff are better prepared to offer guidance for people installing their own livestakes.
