Meet Matt Wender

Matt Wender is a life-long resident of Fayette County, WV. He holds an undergraduate degree in Finance from West Virginia University. Following his college graduation, he was self-employed in the retail trade for twenty-three years. He later returned to school to complete the required hours to take the CPA exam. He successfully passed the exam and soon thereafter became the investment manager for the state- sponsored venture capital fund serving in that capacity for the next seventeen years. Along the way Matt also earned a Master’s in Business Administration.
He has always been active in community affairs including serving as a past United Way Campaign Chairman, board member of the WV Red Cross; board member of the WV HUB; past member and past president of the Oak Hill Lions Club; a founding board member and past president of the New River Gorge Regional Development Authority which encompasses Fayette, Raleigh, Summers and Nicholas Counties. In 2001 Matt was elected to the Fayette County Commission and served in that capacity for eighteen years. As a commissioner he served on numerous county and affiliated boards. He currently serves on the New River Humane Society Board and is a member of the Fayette County Democrat Executive Committee, is presently president of the Canyon Rim Rotary Club and is a board member for the New River Conservancy.
Matt has been honored to receive several awards including the Public Service Award from the WV Society of CPS, Democrat of the Year, Fayette County Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year, in 2006 Matt was awarded the Wallace and Peggy Carroll Vigilance Award as presented by the National Committee for the New River. Matt has one son who along with his family which includes three terrific grandkids live in Blacksburg, VA.
